Truth #3: You Are Trading at the Wrong Time

430 words • ~2 min read

Here is a fact that will immediately improve your results: seventy percent of daily forex volume occurs during thirty percent of trading hours. The remaining hours are low-volume noise that eats your capital through spreads, false signals, and random chop.

The forex market is open twenty-four hours a day, but not all hours are created equal. There are three main sessions:

The Asian session — midnight to 8 AM GMT — is the quietest. Thin liquidity, wide spreads, small ranges. Most trend-following strategies get destroyed here. Most breakout strategies produce false signals.

The London session — 7 AM to 4 PM GMT — is where the market comes alive. Thirty-five percent of all global forex volume flows through London. Spreads compress, volume surges, and real trends establish themselves. The first ninety minutes of London are often the most important period of the entire day.

The London-New York overlap — noon to 4 PM GMT — is the peak. Both of the world's largest financial centers are active simultaneously. The tightest spreads, the deepest liquidity, the strongest trends. This is premium trading time.

After New York closes, the market enters the dead zone until Asia wakes up. This is objectively the worst time to trade.

Here is what I see when I analyze broker-side data: traders who enter positions during the London session and the overlap are significantly more profitable than traders who trade during Asian hours or the dead zone. The edge belongs to those who trade during peak hours and sit on their hands the rest of the time.

I also see clear patterns by day of week. Monday mornings are often traps — the market fakes direction then reverses. Friday afternoons are thin and unreliable. Tuesday through Thursday during London hours is statistically the sweet spot.

Do this exercise: go through your last fifty trades and note the time of each entry. Calculate your win rate by session. I guarantee you will find that eighty percent of your profits come from twenty percent of your trading hours. Double down on those hours. Eliminate the rest.
